Dance participation rates?
Dance is a form of human movement in an artistic form, using very technical abilities. It is often a preferred sport to females rather than males due to its stereotype as feminine and not athletic. The Australian Beareu of statistics stated that in the year before April 2009, there were roughly 348,500 females and 41,900 males between the ages of 5 to 14 years who participated in dancing in Australia (Australian Bureau of Statistics , 2010). From 2000 to 2003, there was a high increase in participation in females, reaching from 20% to 24% (Australian Bureau of Statistics , 2010). Female participation rates have continued to increase more dramatically than males, with statistics showing that 23% more females than males participated in dance in 2009, compared to 18% in 2000 (Australian Bureau of Statistics , 2010).
What is Rock and Roll?
Rock and Roll is a genre of dance that was originated in the 1950’s (Dancetime publications, 2012). It involves partner work and is a very fast paced, technical kind of dance. It is a very popular kind of dance among a wide range of ages. There are different kinds of rock and roll dancing ranging from early styles to more modern forms. It is one of the few forms of partner dancing that require the male to do all the leading, leaving the female of the dance to be instructed by the male throughout (Dancetime publications, 2012).
Currently, the year 12 students of Grace Lutheran College have been participating in Rock and Roll. They were asked the likelihood of them continuing dance once they have left school. It is unlikely that I will continue participating, and this will be explained through use of Figueroa’s Framework and Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs.
