What is
body image and self-concept?
What is body image?
Body image is the how someone feels about the view that they have of his or her own body (Amezdroz, 2012). Put simply, if one feels confident about their own body, they will have a positive body image and vice versa.
What is self-concept?
Self-concept is the vision someone has of their total being. This includes body image, personality, intellectual ability and social capabilities (Glenn Amezdroz, 2010). Having a positive self-concept can ensure confidence with the social aspects of life, however negativity can mean finding many situations daunting and will result in refraining from many activities.
How does body image affect participation in sport?
Research has shown that young people who have a negative body image are less likely to participate in activities, leading to illnesses such as depression (Commonwealth of Australia , 2013). This in turn affects self-esteem. Self-esteem is a term used to describe the feeling you have about yourself. It can alter someone’s overall evaluation of himself or herself. Young people with high self-esteem are generally more likely to participate in a wide range of sports to those that are nervous and hold negative feelings about themselves and their abilities.
